Do you suffer from dental fear and anxiety? Are you delaying necessary dental treatment because of your fear of the dentist? At Scenic Acres Dental Centre, we are pleased to offer NW Calgary Sedation Dentistry options to help our patients achieve oral health and wellness.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
At Scenic Acres Dental Centre, our Team of Dental Professionals will educate you on the method of sedation that will best suit your needs. There are various sedation options that may be used to achieve a relaxed, comfortable, and calm state for our patients. The sedatives we utilize range from mild to moderate in their effect and may be administered by our Dental Team in one of three ways:
- Nitrous Oxide Sedation
- Oral Medication Sedation
- Intravenous (IV) Sedation
When considering which type of sedation method is right for you, we conduct a thorough examination that includes discussion regarding your past medical history, the current prescription medications you are taking and discuss the risks associated with undisclosed recreational drug use and the method of sedation used for your visit. We suggest that you bring a detailed list of your medical history, including any medications and nutritional supplements you may be taking along with you to your initial consultation.
Oral Medication Sedation
Oral Medication Sedations is a stronger form of sedation. You will be required to take prescribed medication before your dental visit. The sedation effects take about 30 to 45 minutes to reach their peak. Patients feel very relaxed and often fall asleep during their treatment. Patients who undergo Oral Medication Sedation are required to have someone drive them to and from their appointment.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide is a relatively gentle form of sedation. Nitrous Oxide is administered through a breathing mask throughout your visit. The benefit of Nitrous Oxide is once the gas is turned off, you return to a conscious state rather quickly.
IV Sedation
IV sedation, also known as conscious sedation or sleep dentistry. This is a sort of intermediate option that doesn’t fully put you to sleep. You may feel like you are less aware of what is going on around you during your procedure or treatment. While other forms of sedation are inhaled like nitrous oxide or are taken in pill form like oral sedation, IV sedation is administered directly through intravenously through a vein.
IV sedation tends to help the patient reach a deeper level of sedation versus oral sedatives.
Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation Dentistry allows people with dental anxiety or fear of the dentist to regain their confidence in the importance of regular hygiene and periodontal treatments. A variety of dental services, such as Teeth Cleanings, Root Canal Therapy, Dental Implants, and more vital dental services are able to be performed with sedation dentistry. Regular dental care, such as dental hygiene visits are essential when preventing the onset of more complex dental problems. Following a routine care and maintenance schedule helps our patients avoid the very thing they fear — with fewer visits to the dentist!
