Do you have missing teeth? If you do, those missing teeth can over time cause your jaw bone to atrophy, or resorb. At Scenic Acres Dental, we use bone grafting as a surgical, dental procedure to replace that bone loss and to encourage natural bone growth. It is often used for a wide variety of treatments.
Why do I Need a Bone Graft?
At Scenic Acres Dental Centre, our Dental Team uses bone grafting for many procedures, primarily Dental Implants. Dental Implants are the preferred replacement method for missing teeth because they restore full functionality to the mouth; however, implants need to be firmly anchored to the jawbone in order to be effective. If the jawbone lacks the necessary quality or quantity of bone, grafting can strengthen and thicken the implant site.
Fortunately, today, we have the ability to grow bone where and when it is needed. This not only gives us the opportunity to place the appropriate dental implant, but we can also restore the functionality and aesthetic appearance of your smile.
What Does Bone Grafting Treatment Involve?
Bone grafts are generally performed under local anesthetic, ideally at the time of the extraction. However, if a large amount of bone needs to be grafted, general anesthetic may be required to perform the procedure.
The grafting material we used needs to be harvested or prepared for insertion. To place the grafting material, a small incision is made in the gum tissue and then is gently separated from the bone. The bone grafting material is then applied to the affected site.
